It's Your Ocean!

Sea Save at the United Nations: Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals for Our Oceans

Dear Friends,

We’ve just landed and are preparing for an intense week of diplomacy, strategy, and global cooperation at the United Nations Ocean Conference. Sea Save Foundation is proud to be here, representing the ocean’s interests on the world stage.

Before we begin sharing live updates, we would like to introduce a critical framework that guides much of the work this week: the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs.

🌍 What Are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The SDGs are a set of 17 global objectives adopted in 2015 by all United Nations Member States. They were created to address the world’s most pressing challenges—from poverty and hunger to climate change and biodiversity loss—through a shared global blueprint.

The deadline is 2030, and we are now in a crucial window for assessing progress and demanding stronger commitments.

🌊 SDG 14: Life Below Water

Of the 17 SDGs, Goal #14: Life Below Water is our focus. This goal aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources. It contains 10 specific targets, including:

  • Reducing marine pollution

  • Protecting marine and coastal ecosystems

  • Ending overfishing and eliminating destructive subsidies

  • Regulating harvesting and restoring fish stocks

  • Conserving at least 10% of coastal and marine areas

  • Prohibiting harmful fishing practices

  • Increasing scientific knowledge and technology transfer

  • Supporting small-scale fisheries

  • Enhancing the implementation of international law

  • Providing access to marine resources and markets for developing nations

We’ll dive into each of these targets in future newsletters, highlighting where we stand and how we can collectively improve

“Oceans do not recognize political boundaries, so we must work internationally to protect them.”

This is the principle guiding our work here. Sea Save is advocating for science-based, enforceable policies to protect ocean life and ensure that SDG 14 is not just a promise—but a reality.

Thank you for standing with us. Updates to come.

With gratitude and resolve,
