Campaign – Dive for a Difference
What Problem Are We Trying to Solve?
Presentations on important ocean conservation efforts are sometimes met with audience silence because the presentations have not been prepared in engaging ways. Students, teachers and scientists cannot currently utilize high-quality photos and videos for their projects without paying royalty fees or sacrificing quality. Furthermore the few good online libraries rarely incorporate Boolean search tools to help users find exactly what they are looking for.
How are we solving this problem?
Sea Save Foundation partners with dive companies and amateur underwater photographers around the world to crowdsource high-quality ocean images and video into a free, searchable database. Participants are asked to share their photos with the database and each photographer’s best shots are watermarked and uploaded to our servers for free distribution. In return, we ask those who download and use photos and videos to share their projects with us; range of usage could run from from elementary school presentations to nonprofit grant applications.
Describe the actual campaign
Scuba divers who travel with partner scuba travel companies will be asked if they would like to participate in the Dive 4 a Difference (D4D) and contribute photos and videos to our library. After their trip, they can send us their files and we will select the most professional shots to use in the D4D database. The participants have elevated their scuba adventure into travel with a purpose, safe in the knowledge that they have contributed to a meaningful project and may well have their images used in ocean presentations and publications.
Every day, divers around the world go underwater and document the state of our reefs. By capturing the energy, enthusiasm, and talent of these divers, we aim to create a comprehensive online shark photography and video library to serve teachers, students, and scientists. Through this program we’ll help give divers the opportunity to contribute and give back to the ocean, while also providing a valuable connection between recreational divers and a worldwide academic team.
How can I make a difference?
Many recreational divers spend countless hours underwater documenting the marine life and ecosystem. We are interested in high-quality natural history and conservation documentation. Teachers, students, and scientists invest energy and resources to develop critical programs. These efforts, combined with cutting-edge visuals, will yield strong results. YOU can be the critical link.
By signing up with our Dive 4 a Difference program, you will be signing on with an international team of volunteers committed to creating a valuable tool that can be used for education and conservation.
Where can I participate?
Through a strategic partnership with DivEncounters, we will eventually be able to reach all corners of the globe. However, we are launching our programs at Cocos and Galapagos Islands.
The unparalleled support of DivEncounter partners will take care of booking your boat accommodations. The knowledgeable crew will guide you to the appropriate site and provide suggestions to successfully execute your mission.
Our first project, The Shark Collection, will soon be available for PDF download. Click here for details.
